I start the New Year with the presentation of a series of works by Friederike Klotz, for which she was awarded the Triennale Prize by the jury of the Triennale Kleinplastik in Fellbach.

“Friederike Klotz develops futuristic settlement systems whose strictly monitored population (consisting of small figures) are subordinated to rhythmic organisations (.......). She recycles packaging material and uses it to create city modules whose fundaments rest on a membrane under which a loudspeaker is placed. The vibrations of the membrane set the figures in the city in motion. They wander among the buildings, driven and manipulated by the sound of the resonating body. (.......) The rhythm of the played inflammatory music (extremely decelerated national anthems), to which the tiny inhabitants vibrate, is reminiscent of social systems controlled in a strictly hierarchical way, while simultaneously reducing their ideological or economic and instrumental-rational ideas to absurdity.”

In a further part of the exhibition, one can find so-called layered drawings in which acrylic glass panels with cityscapes drawn on them are screwed behind one another, resulting in multilayered mega-cities. They are partially based on utopian city plans, and partially on freely invented cities. Already with her stereo drawings (2005), which were on view in the show “Tauchfahrten” at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Klotz dealt with public space: reduced, rigid line drawings of collective places (classrooms, sanitary rooms, public transport etc.) became stereoscopically visible with the aid of a mirror apparatus. At the same time, she presented views of private living spaces by encapsulating photos of actually existing furnishings in artificial resin cubes. The respective inhabitants of these rooms were partially projected like holograms via super8 loops between the furnishings hovering weightlessly in space.
