I am delighted to announce the presentation of a new exhibition by Simon Lewis, whose works I have been showing in my gallery since 1995. With his miniature paintings, as well as with his drawing project, “The Book of Soundings”, which he began with in 2003, Lewis has worked in a radical way on redefining what artists and viewers are capable of achieving – whereby the “observances” have become increasingly interiorised over the years: Initially, by taking up William Blake’s conception of “illuminated books”, he dealt with the unity of picture and text which, in regard to its imagery, was oriented towards historical works containing scientific worldviews.

Now, the pictures he creates are shifted to a poetic-epiphanic language mediated by writing – the series of works titled “Observances” was produced in parallel to the drawing project. It consists of text images composed of short, evocative phrases that, in a condensed language and a dovetailing of typographic and colour design, in an entirely new manner formulate the moments of Romantic subjectivity and the dimensional leaps of his other works.
