The Düsseldorf-based Melton Prior Institute for Reportage Drawing, founded several years ago following the exhibition “Diving Trips – Drawing as Reportage” curated by Alexander Roob and Clemens Krümmel at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and Kunstverein Hannover, will present its first edition in the cabinet room of my gallery on January 17, 2009 – a portfolio of graphics with original contributions by ten international artists.

The edition titled “BREMERHAVEN – NEW YORK” was created in close collaboration with Kunstverein Bremerhaven. In the vein of the reportage approach of the Melton Prior Institute, ten artists were invited to deal with Bremerhaven – in research visits to the city as well – and address the city’s changing character in a variety of ways.

What played a pivotal role in the concept of the portfolio was the strong historical connection between the port city of Bremerhaven, one of the most important places of emigration to both Americas since the 19th century, and New York, as a location of refuge and longing, with which extensive cultural and economic exchanges have taken place over a long period of time.

The portfolio, accompanied by a booklet, not only features a wide range of artistic examinations of this topic, but also a great variety of printing solutions – ranging from classical techniques such as etching and lithography to digital printing and mixed-media approaches. This takes into consideration the different drawing and reproduction techniques of reportage that have always also been subject to historical change.e
